Matías Ríos is recognized among the Top 100 winemakers worldwide
The English magazine The Drinks Business has included Cono Sur’s Director of Winemaking in its annual list of the most outstanding winemakers in the world.
In its next edition 2025, the English publication The Drinks Business will include Matías Ríos among the Top 100 most outstanding winemakers worldwide. This recognition comes as a result of the excellent performance achieved by emblematic wines that the subsidiary produces from the Pinot Noir wine grape, which have been recognized for their quality in blind tastings during the last year:
- Ocio 2021 – Master Medal, The Global Pinot Noir Masters 2024
- 20 Barrels 2021 – Silver Medal, The Global Pinot Noir Masters 2024
- Single Vineyard 2022 – Silver Medal, The Global Pinot Noir Masters 2024
It is worth remembering that, since its inception, our subsidiary Cono Sur has dedicated great efforts to developing and highlighting the Pinot Noir variety, perfecting its management in the vineyard, conditioning its facilities in wineries, incorporating cutting-edge technology and training its winemaking team to obtain the maximum potential of this variety. As a result of this dedicated work, the year 2002 saw the birth of Ocio, the first icon of the vineyard and an international reference for Pinot Noir from the New World. This wine is made in Bodega Ocio, which was recently remodeled and inaugurated in 2023 to commemorate the 30 years of Cono Sur, with the presence and commitment of the main importers and distributors of the subsidiary.
Matías Ríos, Agricultural Engineer and Winemaker, joined Cono Sur in 2003 to strengthen its agricultural and wine team, reaching the position of Director of Winemaking of the subsidiary in 2018. This is the second time that he has been included in this select list – first one was in 2020 -, regarding which he comments: “We are very happy with this news. It is a great recognition of our wines and the tremendous team at Cono Sur, from all areas that make this possible and that I have the honor of representing.”
