The initiative seeks to mobilize the wine sector around practices that make it possible to measure and improve soil health and vineyard biodiversity, strengthening its contribution to environmental and climate challenges.

One block. One challenge. And an opportunity to move forward together toward a more regenerative agriculture.

Viña Concha y Toro is participating in the Chilean launch of the One Block Challenge (1BC) alongside Sistema B (Empresas B) and various participating organizations, including Fundación Chile, INIA, Corfo’s Climate Change Transform program, and Manomet Conservation Sciences. Originally created globally by the Regenerative Viticulture Foundation, this initiative aims to mobilize the wine industry to implement, measure, and share regenerative agriculture practices in vineyards.

At Viña Concha y Toro’s Idahue Estate in the Colchagua Valley, representatives from various companies across the industry gathered to exchange knowledge, tools, and experiences regarding regenerative agriculture and its role in addressing climate and environmental challenges.

Instead of applying theory in abstract terms, the One Block Challenge proposes taking direct action on a specific area of each vineyard to rigorously observe, measure, and understand how its ecosystems function in real conditions. Key indicators—such as soil compaction and infiltration, earthworm populations, and local biodiversity—will establish a baseline and evaluate the direct impact of implemented regenerative practices over time using hard data.

“The One Block Challenge is an opportunity to move forward through measurement and shared learning, generating knowledge that allows us to continue improving the health of our soils and the biodiversity of our fields without losing sight of agricultural productivity. Most importantly, this challenge brings together diverse industry stakeholders around a common goal,” noted Valentina Lira, Sustainability Manager at Viña Concha y Toro.

Through this initiative, Viña Concha y Toro and Sistema B aim to drive concrete action and dialogue around the future of winegrowing, fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders to advance toward healthier, more resilient agricultural systems prepared for future challenges.
