Viña Concha y Toro joins the SWR Bottle Weight Accord to advance on its route to Net Zero

As part of its commitment to reduce carbon emissions and its path towards Net Zero, Viña Concha y Toro seeks to reduce the average weight of its bottles to less than 420grs.

Viña Concha y Toro recently joined the SWR Bottle Weight Accord, a global pact led by the Sustainable Wine Roundtable, committed to reducing the average weight of 750cc wine bottles to less than 420 grams by the end of 2026, which will significantly contribute to mitigating the emissions associated with the production and transportation of glass.

Currently, glass accounts for 30% of Viña Concha y Toro’s emissions. During 2023, the company used 80,000 tonnes of this material, generating 46,000 tonnes of CO2. The average weight of its bottles was 445 grams, a figure that reflects the challenge ahead, but also the opportunity to continue to lead in sustainability.

The commitment made by Viña Concha y Toro includes:

  • Progressively reduce the weight of the heaviest bottles.
  • To reduce its packaging to reach the average weight targets by 2026.
  • Working with partners throughout the supply chain to facilitate this change.
  • The company will report semi-annually on its progress, ensuring transparency and promoting collaboration across the industry.

Reducing bottle weight aligns with Viña Concha y Toro’s Net Zero goals, integrating with a broader strategy that encompasses energy efficiency, regenerative agricultural practices and process optimisation. By reducing the emissions associated with glass, the winery reaffirms its leadership in sustainability and responds to the growing expectations of conscious consumers.

With this new commitment, Viña Concha y Toro consolidates its position as a benchmark in the global wine industry, moving towards a more efficient and environmentally friendly production model.
