Presenting the efforts the company has made to advance in a more sustainable production, Viña Concha y Toro was represented by its Center for Research and Innovation in a meeting that was held in the city of Porto, Portugal  and brought together the world wine industry.

Thanks to its efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change, this March 6 and 7, Gerard Casaubon, Director of Viña Concha y Toro´s Center for Research and Innovation (CRI), epitomized the Chilean wine industry in the international congress “Climate Change Leadership”. In this instance, more than 50 wine-producing countries met to analyze the current panorama of the industry, share their experiences and project the challenges that lie ahead.

The conference, held in the city of Porto, Portugal, focused on the best use of water resources, energy efficiency, more effective viticulture techniques, ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, packaging innovations and transportation, and preservation of biodiversity.

“Science and the wine industry have been spaces that have come closer in collaboration to analyze and reduce the effects produced by climate change. The CRI´s purpose is to develop state-of-the-art wine research applied to the industry “, says Gerard Casaubon, who delivered his expertise in relation to the scientific tools that have been developed by the company to take care of the environment, through its center of applied research.

The CRI, which has been in operation for five years, has made important progress in this regard, with programs ranging from the vineyard to the product. It seeks to reduce the impact on the environment, which, in addition to the sustainability program of Wines of Chile I+D Consortium, will allow a better adaptation to the new climatic conditions that are already beginning to change the landscape of viticulture in Chile and the world.

“Viña Concha y Toro´s participation in the conference represents a clear sign of commitment to the sustainability of the world wine industry. By sharing the main results to date of its plan and strategic research, development and innovation programs, it demonstrates that it takes on the challenge of adapting viticulture, particularly in Chile and the southern hemisphere, to climate change”, the director comments.
