R&D in regenerative agriculture to achieve our sustainability goals
Through its Center for Research and Innovation, Viña Concha y Toro is continuing efforts to position itself as a wine industry leader in sustainability.
One of Viña Concha y Toro’s main commitments in recent years has been to position itself as an industry leader in sustainability. Thanks to a range of initiatives in Chile and other key markets, the company has made major strides toward that goal.
One of these initiatives is the Center for Research and Innovation’s (CRI) Sustainability and Circularity Strategic Program, whose objective is to research, assess and develop technologies and knowledge applied to conventional and organic winemaking. This program aims to reinforce Viña Concha y Toro’s position as a company that acts respectfully toward the environment, a central concept in regenerative agriculture.
“The Center for Research and Innovation has been working on this strategic program since 2018, when we were awarded the “Development and Validation of Technologies for Efficient and High-Quality Composting” project by the Chilean Economic Development Agency (CORFO) led by Viñedos Emiliana, in which we participate actively as partners together with Viña Cono Sur. We are currently developing field trials which will enable us to valorize our waste more efficiently and maximize the benefits of applying compost to vineyard soil”, said CRI Researcher Rosa Roa.
The benefits that will be provided by this strategic program include the fact that the evaluation of these practices in a scientific context will enable the areas involved to obtain clear information to aid the decision-making process, which has a direct impact on the company’s sustainable development. “In parallel, we will continue to evaluate new lines of research on issues related to soil health, greenhouse gas emissions, waste valorization and vineyard nutrition, in order to contribute on several fronts to Viña Concha y Toro’s commitment to maintain its position as a leader in sustainability”, concluded Roa.
